Our Colonial-Style Clock - Assembled & Finished!

This is not a kit, but rather, a fully assembled, 14th-century-style, finished clock, ready to hang on your wall, right out of the box! It is meticulously hand-made, out of various Maple woods, including the coveted Bird's-Eye Maple. It is then hand-finished to a brilliant sheen. Many man-hours (about 120) go into the making of each of our finished Colonial-Style clocks. They are truly beautiful! Best of all, there are really no two clocks that are exactly alike, simply because of the wood grains that are unique to each finished clock.

Unlike other styled 14th-century clocks, our Colonial-Style Clock is very accurate! The "genius" inventor of this clock, Mr. Joe Monincx, has been making this very clock for over 35 years. All of his Colonial-Style Clocks, to our knowledge, are still running beautifully, and the only maintenance seems to be the winding cord that can deteriorate after many years of use! (And that's an easy fix!).

In the words of the creator of this clock: "The hour-hand clocks made in Europe, long ago, were made with a sway-bar. In the past, the escapement of sway-bar clocks used to be very hard for people to work with and they were also very fragile. So I started by making a different escapement, to make it easier for people to work with. Now it is an effortless thing with my Colonial-Style Clock. So from this, I could now add a minute hand by adding some more gears and still be able to keep the mechanism simple. In order to make the clock more durable, I doubled the thickness of the wood gears, increased the spindle size and added hard nylon bearings. The Colonial-Style Clock is a true hybrid of clocks past. It is very durable, simple to regulate, beautiful, and should last many life-times to come."

Our Note: Our Colonial-Style Clock is most interesting in that it pre-dates the pendulum clocks by about 300 years. These clocks operate with what we call "a verge and foliot."  Essentially, the top horizontal bar moves left and then right, suspended by a cord.  Hence the term, "sway-bar clocks." The pallet engages the escape wheel while the bar turns back and forth and the escape gear is turned in one second intervals. The original verge and foliot clocks were not very accurate, as Mr. Monincx has stated. In fact, many earlier versions of sway-bar clocks had only an hour hand! That's all changed with our Colonial-Style Clock! Thank you, Mr. Joe Monincx, for this lovely, classic clock of days gone by, to our modern age!
